Pest Control in Coalinga, CA

Coalinga sits out in the Coast Range foothills on the Valley’s far west side, oil-field country where dry rangeland rings the town — and that parched ground sends ground squirrels, field crickets, spiders and mice toward homes as summer wears on. J&J Pest Control makes the roughly 70-minute trip southwest to this hillside town, well off the orchard map. Call (321) 496-4080.

Dry rangeland pests in oil-field country

Coalinga is a west-side oil town set against the Coast Range foothills, far from the irrigated orchard country, and its pest pressure comes off the dry hills rather than the farm. The surrounding rangeland is open, sun-baked grassland, and California ground squirrels honeycomb it with burrows. As the hills cure brown and food dries up in late summer, the squirrels push toward the irrigated green of yards, parks and home landscaping, undermining slabs, patios and foundations with their digging. Field crickets erupt from the same dry ground in late summer and early fall, drawn to lights at night in numbers that pile up at doorways and work their way into garages and homes.

The dry terrain also favors spiders — black widows in the rock piles, woodpiles, garages and block walls typical here — and as the rangeland dries, house mice and deer mice test the structures at the town’s edge. Much of Coalinga was rebuilt after the 1983 earthquake, so a lot of the housing stock is of that era, with the slab and block construction that gives squirrels, crickets and spiders their gaps and harborage. Summers are hot and water is the prize, so whatever is outside eventually tries the house. The work here is about the perimeter and the burrows, not an orchard fence line.

Local knowledge

Local knowledge in and around Coalinga

Coalinga is our farthest regular stop, roughly 70 minutes southwest of the Fresno base out past the I-5 corridor into the foothills, so we schedule it on planned routes with a clear arrival window rather than same-day. We cover the town — much of it rebuilt after the 1983 quake — and the rural, ranch and oil-field properties around it. Ground-squirrel work centers on the burrow systems: treating and collapsing active burrows around the structure, exclusion along foundations and outbuildings, and ongoing management for properties backed onto open range, since the hills keep resupplying them. For the late-summer cricket surge we treat the perimeter and harborage and talk through the exterior lighting that draws them to the doors. The black-widow work hits the rock and wood piles, walls and garages where they hide, and we treat the outbuildings common on these lots, because on the rangeland edge the pests live well beyond the back door.

Never see a pest in my house. J&J is the best. Very kind office staff. Pierre has sprayed for us for many years and we feel like we have family coming when he's on his way.

Jim came out and sprayed our house for the first time today and he was very knowledgeable and kind. From the first phone call to them, the customer service is outstanding. Prices are fair, and a locally owned business. Recommend!

Pest control in Coalinga: common questions

Because the rangeland around town cures brown and its food dries up, so the California ground squirrels that honeycomb the dry hills push toward the irrigated green of yards, parks and landscaping. Their digging undermines slabs, patios and foundations. We treat and collapse the active burrows around the structure and exclude along foundations, with ongoing management for lots backed onto open range.
